Coalition Advisory Board Meets with ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda

On Friday, 21 September 2012, the Advisory Board of the Coalition for the International Criminal Court met with International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda at the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute in New York to discuss key issues facing the ICC and the Rome Statute system. Ms. Bensouda—who was sworn in as prosecutor of the ICC in June—and the Advisory Board discussed a broad range of issues and challenges facing the ICC, including the importance of the independence of the Office of the Prosecutor, the upcoming election of a new deputy prosecutor and ways to ensure continued political support for the ICC.

“The ICC is a crucial innovation in international justice and the fight against impunity, but it is paramount that the justice meted out by the Court is—and is perceived as being—fair and impartial,” said Dr. Jonathan Fanton, Advisory Board member and Franklin Delano Roosevelt visiting fellow at the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College. “In that regard, prosecutorial independence from government politics is crucial, and ought to be strongly supported. The Coalition has long been a strong advocate for ensuring this independence, and the Advisory Board looks forward to working closely with the prosecutor to end impunity for the most serious crimes.”

The Coalition's Advisory Board is composed of eminent individuals with expertise in global affairs and international justice, and serves as a global leadership group in support of the cause of international justice and provides the Coalition with strategic guidance.

“The ICC has faced many challenges in its first 10 years, and the next decade is likely to be just as challenging,” said Advisory Board member and Coalition Convener William R. Pace. “We welcome the new ICC prosecutor, and the Coalition and its 2,500 members around the world look forward to working closely with her to ensure that the ICC delivers on its great promise. The support of high-level experts such as the individuals that sit on the Coalition’s Advisory Board will be as needed as ever if the Court is to meet those challenges.”

Following the Advisory Board meeting, a reception was held in honor of Prosecutor Bensouda, which was attended by a diverse group of people, including Coalition civil society members, diplomats, ICC and UN staff and academics.
