COLLEGE STATION, Texas—Three people, including a Brazos County constable, died Monday when a gunman opened fire near the Texas A&M campus in College Station, according to investigators.
Police identified Brazos County Precinct One Constable Brian Bachmann, 41, as the officer who died. Investigators said he was the first to arrive on the scene at a house at the corner of Fidelity and Highland.
The gunman, 35-year-old Thomas Caffall, also killed 43-year-old Chris Northcliff, a civilian. He wounded a woman from Houston and a police officer before officers shot him to death.

Bachmann went to the small house near Kyle Field around 12:30 p.m. to serve an eviction notice. He was gunned down in the front yard.
Caffall then opened fire on other officers who responded to the scene.
“An individual was inside the address and began taking fire on the officers. The officers defended themselves and called in additional officers. Additional officers responded and began trying to handle the situation as best as possible,” said Asst. Chief Scott McCollum, of the College Station Police Department.

The shootout with the suspect lasted for an "extended period of time," the chief said.
Chuck Ross, who lives nearby, said he heard as many as 40 gunshots.
"I heard two bullets whiz right by my room... and I just threw myself out of bed and said, 'I don't think I should be by my window right, now," Ross said.

Officers who rushed to the shooting scene tried to save Bachmann.
“Several of the officers that were responding began CPR on the constable and he was transported to a local hospital,” McCollum said. "Brian Bachmann was very close to everyone in law enforcement. He was a pillar in this community and it's sad and tragic that we lost him today."
The male civilian who died is believed to be around 65. Police are still trying to confirm his identity and notify his family.
The wounded woman is 55-year-old Barbara Holdsworth, of Houston, according to CultureMap. She was reportedly in ICU after several hours of surgery.
A College Station police officer was shot in the leg and was taken to the hospital in stable condition, McCollum said. Two other officers were treated for shrapnel wounds and released.
“It is a tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those involved and we will do our best to conduct a very thorough and accurate investigation to try and determine exactly why this occurred and provide some answers to the public,” McCollum said.
McCollum is not commenting on a possible motive at this time.
An attorney for the family released a statement on the shooting Monday evening:
Linda Weaver, mother of Tres [Thomas] Caffall, asked me (Tyler Moore, family attorney) to forward this release to you in behalf of her family relating to the terrible shooting in College Station today.
“Our family was shocked and devastated by the tragedy this afternoon. Our thoughts and prayers go to the families of the deceased and the wounded victims. We mourn them and the loss of Tres. He had been ill. It breaks our hearts his illness led to this. “Please respect our privacy in our grief.”
Texas A&M's emergency website issued a “Code Maroon” alert around 12:29 p.m., telling students and staff to avoid the area near the 200 block of Fidelity Drive, just east of campus. About 15 minutes later, school officials announced that the shooter had been taken into custody.
Texas A&M is the sixth largest university in the nation, with close to 50,000 students enrolled. Freshmen do not move onto campus until August 19 and the first day of the fall semester is August 27.
