Angela Merkel's U-turn on nuclear energy became even more gear-crunching on Tuesday when she announced the temporary closure of seven of Germany's nuclear power stations.
The chancellor said that reactors built before 1980 would be taken offline while an urgent review of their safety was carried out.
"Safety has the priority in all our deliberations," Merkel declared after she met politicians from affected German states.
This latest announcement came just a day after Germany's coalition government announced a three-month delay in its decision to extend the lifespan of Germany's 17 elderly nuclear power stations.
German papers mulled over Merkel's dramatic wavering in policy in response to the unfolding disaster at the Fukushima plant in Japan.
Critics claim that the chancellor's real reason for switching the stations off is elections in three German federal states – in particular Baden-Württemberg, where Merkel's Christian Democrats are running neck and neck with the centre-left Social Democrats (though an opinion poll on Tuesday put Merkel's CDU party five points ahead). One of the controversial reactors is in the southern state. Elmer Jehn, a columnist writing in Hamburger Morgenpost, said Merkel was guilty of realpolitik. He linked her "reversal" on nuclear power to the poll in Baden-Württemberg on 27 March, writing: "Since Japan, every sensible person knows that nuclear energy is dead."
Unsurprisingly, the catastrophe in Japan dominates newspapers' front pages.
The tabloid Bild reprints a full-page photograph of Fukushima's reactor No 3 going up in smoke, just above an image of an embattled Merkel. The headline says: "Here the next nuclear reactor explodes … and here Angela Merkel announces an atomic U-turn." Bild notes that German firms are now selling a record number of Geiger counters, which can cost up to €500 (about £450) each.
There are a few other stories of note. The daily Süddeutsche Zeitung always has good science pages, and reports on Tuesday two interesting developments. First, bees have been dying out: Europe's bee population has fallen 10-30%, while the numbers in the Middle East have dropped by 85%. Parasites, pesticides, and destroyed habitats are blamed for the reduction.
The paper also reports that Neanderthals, thought to have sprung from what is now modern-day Germany, mastered fire much earlier than thought. They were lighting fires and cooking stew 400,000 years ago, an article says.
Amid the gloom there is at least some good news for one dog owner. On Monday the paper Bild reported that punks had been stealing dogs from the streets of Hamburg, including Nina Schmidt's hound, Joker. On Tuesday the punks left Joker at a police station. "He's dog-tired, sleeps all day, but is otherwise healthy," Nina said, after being reunited with him."

"Pecho tierra", niños del kinder Alfonso Reyes
“Todos abajo con su carita pegada al piso. No me levanten la cabeza”, les dijo la maestra Martha Rivera Alanís a sus 16 alumnos del kinder Alfonso Reyes mientras afuera un tiroteo acababa con la vida de cinco personas en La Nueva Estanzuela ubicada al sur de Monterrey, una de las miles de zonas convertidas en campo de batalla.
No era la primera vez que los niños escuchaban una balacera. El sector carece de vigilancia y las ráfagas de metralleta se han convertido en parte de su cotidianidad. Cientos de escuelas en México se han visto obligadas a suspender clases durante distintos períodos del año escolar. El poder del crimen organizado prevalece por encima del Estado convirtiendo territorios enteros en tierra de nadie.
Son ya 40 mil muertos. Miles de víctimas inocentes han queda atrapadas entre las balas. Por eso la maestra Martha sabía que tenía que proteger a “sus pollitos” como ella les dice. Y lo primero que se le ocurrió fue convertir aquella escena aterradora del fuego cruzado en un lugar seguro.
Gracias a su entereza un video con la escena ha recorrido el mundo. Allí se puede ver como la maestra de 34 años controla la situación. “Si mi amor, todos en el piso”, le dice a un niño que le pregunta el por qué de la medida. “Chiquitos, no nos pasa nada. No pasa nada. Aquí no nos va a pasar nada. No me levanten la cabeza, por favor”.
Los balazos se escuchan afuera con claridad, pero la maestra encuentra una manera de aislar a los niños y trasladarlos a un lugar seguro, al menos mentalmente. “Vamos a cantar una canción”, les dice y empieza con voz tranquila: “Si las gotas de lluvia fueran de chocolate. Me encantaría estar allí”.
Los niños la siguen, se relajan y empiezan a cantar. Por un instante la balacera pasa a segundo plano gracias a esa canción que incluye instrucciones de la maestra para acostarse boca arriba, una posición ideal para quienes quieren empezar a recibir la lluvia de chocolate.
Imagino el miedo interior de la maestra, la angustia de saber que en cualquier momento aquellas ráfagas podían penetrar el salón de clases. Imagino el estímulo del instinto de supervivencia, el deseo de salir corriendo con todos los niños para llevarlos a un lugar seguro...
Pero la maestra Martha aguantó estoicamente el mal trago. Puso en práctica el incipiente protocolo de seguridad de la Secretaría de Educación. Y se dio tiempo de grabar ese momento para mostrar lo que se vive en esta parte de México. Luego subió el video a su página de Facebook y lo tituló: “Mi día de hoy”. De allí la grabación fue tomada por un portal local y luego a Youtube donde el video de casi un minuto y medio se convirtió en uno de los más vistos.
Los periodistas que la esperaban afuera de una ceremonia donde le otorgaron un “reconocimiento por su valor” la bombardearon a preguntas: “No, no me considero una heroína. Solamente lo hice con el corazón”... “Si tuve miedo, claro que tuve miedo, mi mano temblaba pero mis niños fueron los que me sacaron adelante”.... les dijo con absoluta sencillez.
La maestra Martha Rivera ha dejado de ser una persona anónima. A pesar de su momentánea celebridad sigue dando clases con normalidad. Y la cruda realidad se impone otra vez. Ayer a un lado del kinder volvieron las balaceras. México esta sumido en el caos de una guerra perdida y sostenida sin planeación ni logística. Las noticias se repiten diariamente: asesinaron a cinco taxistas durante la mañana a un lado del mismo kinder... Ella, la maestra Martha Rivera, sigue cantando con los niños tumbados al suelo y boca arriba, convirtiendo la lluvia de balas en lluvia de chocolate: “ ¿Quién quiere chocolate?... Abriendo la boca para saborear”.... “Si las gotas de lluvia fueran de chocolate. Me encantaría estar allí”.

Officials say the gun accidentally discharged when it fell out of child's pocket

A kindergartener brought a gun to his elementary school and was among three students injured by fragments when it dropped from his pocket during lunchtime and accidentally fired, officials said. One bullet discharged about 11 a.m. local tie in the school's cafeteria, spraying fragments at the students, said Houston Independent School District Assistant Police Chief Robert Mock.
"Either some type of chips off the floor, or it could be pieces of the round that discharged," Mock said. "They had some cuts and stuff on their legs, they don't appear to be life threatening."
Two 6-year-old boys, including the one who had the gun, were wounded in the foot, said district spokesman Jason Spencer. A 5-year-old girl also suffered a foot injury, Spencer said.
Live video aired by KPRC TV showed children being loaded onto stretchers. The station later reported on its website that the students were being treated for injuries, ranging from powder burns to scrapes. All were sitting up and appeared to be talking with emergency personnel. Upset parents rushed to the scene.
"The danger has passed and counselors are at the scene," said Norm Uhl, a district spokesman.
The students were taken to Texas Children's Hospital. Investigators told KPRC TV that they are trying to determine where the child got the gun.
The school, which enrolls about 500 students, is located in northeast Houston. Houston is the state's largest school district with more than 200,000 students.

Whistleblower site WikiLeaks has released documents, published for the first time by Al-Masry Al-Youm, which reveal that an American diplomat recommended that the US use information on the presence of radioactive material in Egypt as a means of applying diplomatic pressure on the country.
The recommendation was made following a report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) indicating the presence of highly enriched uranium particles. According to one of the documents, the IAEA independently began an investigation into “Egypt’s nuclear files”.
According to the document concerning the “investigation into enriched uranium particles found at the Anshas power plant," dated 5 August 2010, Geoffrey Pyatt, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, recommended that the US employ the “implementation of safeguards” report issued annually by the IAEA “to pressure Egypt into being more cooperative in the council and in general leadership."
Pyatt also recommended the US show “its concern over the highly enriched uranium or the intention of enriching it”, as recommended by Israeli Ambassador to the US Michael Orion.
According to another secret document leaked from the US Embassy, Egypt's Minister of Electricity, Hassan Younes, awarded a bid to Australia's Worley Parsons instead of the Bechtel Power Company of the US. Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plant Authority offered a US$188 million contract for ten years for the development of Egypt’s first nuclear power plant.
According to the same document, US Ambassador to Egypt Margaret Scobey met with Gamal Mubarak to discuss the Bechtel issue. Younes then requested a meeting with Scobey. Younes said that the Egyptian government informed Bechtel on 11 April that it was being excluded from the bid after the company repeatedly failed to comply with provisions of the tender. Bechtel was given a final date of 28 April for compliance, but failed to reply until 1 May, he said.
