"Rick Perry By The Numbers

Amnesty International does not comment or take sides on elections. But everyone knows that Rick Perry, Texas Governor for over a decade, is now running for President. And everyone knows that during his tenure as Texas Governor, he has presided over a lot of executions. The total now sits at 234 (40% of all US executions carried out since Perry became Governor in December 2000).

Many folks also know that at least one of those, Cameron Todd Willingham, was probably innocent, and that evidence of his innocence was ignored by Governor Perry in the days and hours before Willingham was put to death. And that an investigation into the dubious forensics that led to Willingham’s conviction was sidetracked when Perry suddenly put Williamson County District Attorney John Bradley in charge (Bradley is now being accused of withholding evidence of innocence in a case in his home county).

But there have been other cases of possible innocence, and, as currently scheduled, Perry’s 240th execution would be of Henry Skinner, a man whose innocence claim the Lone Star State is refusing to examine.

Mientras no se multipliquen con ello los sangrientos y lamentables episodios de dominio global, como el ocurrido al seno del Virginias’ Tech., o en Fort Hood, Texas, en donde un psiquiatra llamado Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, abriera fuego en agravio de sus pares del ‘Army’, matando a 12 e hiriendo a 31. Nótese que en este caso, un profesional estudioso y experto en la conducta humana, sus desviaciones y desajustes, es de suponer pasó todos y cada uno de los examenes de personalidad y socio-económicos, para una vez conocido su perfil y descartando potencial peligrosidad, se le extendiera el permiso para portar armas de fuego… (sic)

Resulta interesante el que se propalara formal y públicamente la exposición de motivos y el razonamiento 'hermenéutico' constitucional y legal en que se apoye la mentada Iniciativa en dicha demarcación territorial, como debió haberse hecho en otras jurisdicciones de los “Vecinos Distantes”, en donde se venden armas de fuego de diverso calibre, cual si fuera pan calientito del día, en teoría, sólo a quienes acrediten ser ciudadanos o ciudadanas de los Estados Unidos (USA).

La 'Dream Act' pudiera ser víctima de fuego cruzado, mas como medida preventiva no sería descabellada la idea de que los órganos legislativos o los representantes debidamente legitimados de cada soberanía, es decir, de cada país --incluyendo a Palestina-- preocupados por los Derechos Humanos --destacando entre estos el Derecho a la Vida-- de sus connacionales que estudien o trabajen en dichos Planteles Docentes, al través de sus buenos oficios e inclusive mediante sendas cartas rogatorias, atentamente y con los insertos necesarios, interpelen a sus pares, es decir, a los y las legisladores (as) que andan muy calientes e inquietos para que se apruebe tan riesgosa Iniciativa, a fin de que con la mente más fría, se sensibilicen, atentos el flagrante estado de indefensión en que podrían verse envueltos aquellos (as) estudiantes y trabajadores que fueran sorprendidos por fuego (s) cruzado (s) como los hechos referidos, lo cual es latente, potencial y grave amenaza para su integridad física y mental --pudiendo ser afectados en su aprovechamiento académico--, aunado a que no se exige a los (las) ciudadanos (as) de los E.U. (USA) adquirentes de dichas armas de fuego, contrato de seguro alguno para en su caso, las víctimas o los deudos de éstas expecten, de así desearlo, la "indemnización" (llamada "justicia por equivalente") que conforme a Derecho les asista (sic).

E inclusive, por que no imaginar el que podría darse el caso de que algún alumno (a) o profesor (a), al salir del Campus o Plantel Docente en donde estudien o impartan cátedra respectivamente, colocaran en el asiento de su automóvil la mochila, bolso o cualesquier otro aditamento en donde portaran su arma de fuego, y ésta saliera de su lugar, pudiendo correr dichas personas la fatal suerte que corriera el Agente de la CIA: Ronald Carnaby, según versiones de algunos de los policías que actuaron en su persecución y exterminio, quienes aducen que observaron un arma de fuego en el asiento del acribillado agente al descender de su automóvil...(sic)

Si en ocasiones se olvida desactivar o colocar en vibrador el teléfono celular para no perturbar el orden en el salón de clases o en cualesquier otro lugar que así lo demande la civilidad y urbanidad: ¿por qué no imaginar el descuido en que podría incurrir el (la) portador (a) de un arma de fuego, al no activar el seguro de ésta, en su caso...?

Iniciativas como la que nos atañe, podría inclusive acentuar la muy repudiable y xenofóbica brutalidad policíaca...

WASHINGTON – Texas is poised to approve a measure allowing college students and professors to carry guns on campus, an initiative with strong support in the state legislature that critics concede they probably can't stop.

The legislation has been championed by Gov. Rick Perry, co-sponsored by over half the lawmakers in the state House, and approved two years ago in the Senate. Texas would follow Utah, the only state in the nation to have a similar law.

"It's strictly a matter of self-defense," state Sen. Jeff Wentworth, a Republican, told The Associated Press [1]. "I don't ever want to see repeated on a Texas college campus what happened at Virginia Tech, where some deranged, suicidal madman goes into a building and is able to pick off totally defenseless kids like sitting ducks."
The measure's supporters commonly argue that it would make campus shootings less likely, not more, wading into a key point of contention between opponents and proponents of looser gun laws.

College leaders across the nation have criticized the idea as dangerous, dismissing the view that a filling up the classrooms and dorm rooms with weapons would make inhabitants safer.

Glen Johnson, Oklahoma's chancellor of high education envisioned "no scenario where allowing concealed weapons on college campuses will do anything other than create a more dangerous environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors."

That the Texas legislature overwhelmingly disagrees is a testament to the state's gun culture as well as the towering political influence of the pro-gun lobby.

"Things do look bleak," Colin Goddard of the Brady Campaign Against Gun Violence, who was in Austin lobbying against the bill, told AP. "People want to be the hero, I understand that. They play video games and they think they understand the reality. It's nothing like that."

Nationwide, the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights groups have in the last two decades outspent gun-control advocates by over 20-to-1 on lobbying, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Texas ranks 32nd on the list of states with most permissive gun laws, and 23rd in per capita gun deaths, according to data compiled by The Daily Beast [2].
