Gaza. Decenas de miles de palestinos recibieron hoy al
jefe del movimiento radical Hamas en el exilio, Jaled Meshal, en su primera
visita a la Franja de Gaza.
El político de 56 años volvió a pisar hoy suelo palestino por
primera vez desde que huyera con sus padres cuando sólo tenía once años. Al
llegar, se arrodilló y besó el suelo palestino.
Su visita se contempla como un símbolo de la posición reforzada
de Hamas tras el conflicto con Israel de finales de noviembre, después de que
Hamas celebrara el alto el fuego como una victoria, ante la renuncia de Israel a
una ofensiva terrestre. Meshal ha abogado por un alto el fuego a largo
plazo.
Meshal visitó la región con motivo del 25 aniversario de la
fundación de Hamas, que se cumple el sábado y cuando está previsto que hable
durante una marcha conmemorativa.
Hamas, que niega el derecho a la existencia de Israel, está
vista por Estados Unidos y Europa como una organización terrorista.
Meshal llegó a Gaza a través del paso fronterizo de Al Rafah,
donde fue saludado por el líder en la Franja de Gaza del gobierno de Hamas,
Isamil Haniya. Representantes de otros grupos de milicianos lo saludaron
también.
En el recibimiento estuvieron representados además
representantes del movimiento rival Al Fatah, liderado por el presidente
palestino Mahmud Abbas. Meshal ha abogado por la reconciliación con ese partido
palestino moderado.
En su visita de tres días, Meshal visitará las viviendas del
fundador de Hamas, el jeque Ahmed Yassin, asesinado por Israel en 2004, y del
vicejefe militar de la organización, Ahmed al Yabari, también asesinado el 14 de
noviembre pasado.
Asimismo quiere acudir al lugar donde murieron los 14 miembros
de una familia por un misil israelí durante el conflicto de ocho días de
noviembre.
Meshal está radicado actualmente en Qatar, después de tener que
marcharse de Siria por el conflicto en ese país. Hamas controla la Franja de
Gaza de forma total desde junio de 2007.
Meshal dirige Hamas desde 1996. En 1997 sobrevivió a un intento
de asesinato por parte de Israel en Ammán."

Hamas' political leader Khaled Meshaal, who has been living in exile for 45 years, will be visiting the Gaza Strip for the first time ever on Friday for the 25th anniversary of the group's founding.
Meshaal was a critic of the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, and is considered one of the driving forces behind Hamas' continued arming, and their refusal to recognize Israel and adhere to the "Road Map to Peace" laid out by the Diplomatic Quartet in the 2002 Madrid Talks. Meshaal was also heavily involved, along with recently killed Hamas military leader Amhed Jabaari, in the prisoner swap deal that released Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in 2011.
While in Gaza, Meshaal is expected to meet with civilians and representatives from different parties, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said, as well as the families of the "martyrs, prisoners, and those injured in the last Israeli aggression against Gaza." He will also speak on Saturday, during Hamas' anniversary rally.
Meshaal's landmark visit to Gaza is widely seen as a baton-pass to a new Hamas leadership, as he is widely rumored to not be seeking re-election. The talks will also be closely watched for any signs of unification between Hamas and Fatah, which have been sharply at odds since 2007.
Meshaal was a vocal supporter of Palestine Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' push in the U.N. to upgrade the status of the Palestinian Territories. Moreover, after Fatah's triumph in the U.N., and the victory that Hamas is claiming over Israel after the eight-day conflict, it may be the perfect time for the two Palestinian governments to show a united front.
Meshaal notably endorsed the unity deal proposed by Egypt in 2011 to bring the Palestinian factions together, and said in an interview with Reuters that the combination of the U.N. victory and the Gaza conflict should be seen as "empowering to all Palestinians."
Earlier this week, Hamas granted amnesty to 12 Fatah fighters who defected from Gaza in 2007, who were told to "join the resistance and stop wasting time."

“This is an historic day in my life,” Meshal said minutes after arriving,
expressing a wish that “God will grant me martyrdom on the land of
Palestine.”
Visibly emotional, he wiped away tears as he sat with Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas prime minister, at a brief welcome reception.
In a statement to the media, Meshal said he considered his arrival in Gaza his “third birth,” following his actual birth, in 1956, and the day he survived an Israeli assassination attempt by Israeli agents in Jordan 15 years ago.
“I pray to God that my fourth birth will be the day when all of Palestine is liberated,” Meshal said, ticking off areas Israel occupied after the Six-Day War in 1967, and then cities that have been part of the modern state of Israel since its founding in 1948.
“Gaza today, and after it Ramallah, and Jerusalem, and Haifa and Jaffa, God willing,” he said.
Meshal has spent his life moving from one Arab state to another. He and his family left Jordan for Kuwait soon after fleeing the West Bank, but he returned to Jordan after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait that led to the 1991 Persian Gulf War. In 1999, when Jordan outlawed Hamas, he and other leaders were expelled. Meshal lived in Qatar until 2001, when he moved to Damascus, Syria. He was based there until 10 months ago, when he returned to Qatar because of Syria’s civil war.
On Friday, after traveling to Gaza City, Meshal visited the home of the assassinated founder of Hamas, Sheik Ahmad Yassin, and was mobbed by an enthusiastic crowd gathered outside.
He was also expected to visit the home of Ahmed Jabari, the head of Hamas’s armed wing, who was killed last month in the Israeli airstrike that began an eight-day offensive by Israel’s military aimed at halting cross-border rocket attacks by Gaza militants.
On Saturday, Meshal is to address a mass rally marking the 25th anniversary of the founding of Hamas and “victory” in last month’s fighting with Israel, during which Hamas rockets landed near Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman, said Meshal’s visit was one of the achievements of November’s fighting, “a fruit of the victory of the resistance over the occupation.”
