The ANSWER Coalition is calling on everyone to join a demonstration or to organize one on the National Day of Action on Saturday, February 4, to demand: “No War on Iran, No Sanctions, No Intervention, No Assassinations.”
The U.S.-led campaign to bring about regime change is escalating. Just today, the European Union announced a complete embargo of Iranian oil. Taken together with the other economic sanctions imposed by the U.S. and its allies, this is a campaign meant to impose maximum suffering on the people of Iran by destabilizing and destroying the country’s economy. At the same time, covert action inside the country, including assassinations, sabotage and drone over flights, is intensifying. U.S. military bases surround Iran, while nuclear-armed U.S. aircraft carriers and Trident submarines sit right off its cost.
The pretext for this aggression against another country in the strategic Persian Gulf region is that Iran is developing nuclear weapons, an assertion that Iranian leaders have denied. The utter hypocrisy of this charge by the world’s leading nuclear weapons power and its nuclear-armed allies, including Israel, Britain and France, could not be clearer.
U.S. seeks to repeat history
Sixty years ago, the U.S. and British imposed a worldwide embargo on Iranian oil in response to the nationalization of the country’s petroleum resources by the Mossadegh government, the first democratically elected government in Iran’s history. The embargo weakened the government enough so that in 1953 the U.S. CIA was able to carry out a coup, and place the Shah (king) back on the throne. For the next 25 years, the Shah served a extremely brutal agent of the U.S., killing up to 100,000 Iranians in the regime’s notorious torture chambers, and turning the country’s resources over to U.S. oil companies and banks.
Twenty-one years ago the U.S. pushed the UN Security Council a total blockade of Iraq. Thirteen years of sanctions killed more than a million Iraqis and severely weakened the country, paving the way for the 2003 invasion and an occupation which killed a million more Iraqis and killed and wounded tens of thousands of U.S. and other occupying troops.
Now is the time to take action to stop the war that has already started against Iran before it escalates. We hope that you will join us in cities where demonstrations are already scheduled, or organize a protest if one is not yet planned in your city, town or campus.

"Irán: los efectos del embargo europeo

Los gobernantes de Alemania, Francia y Gran Bretaña, Angela Merkel, Nicolas Sarkozy y David Cameron, respectivamente, anunciaron ayer que sus administraciones impondrán un paquete de sanciones sin precedente contra Irán, al tiempo que la Unión Europea lanzaba un embargo a las importaciones de petróleo iraní, medida que se aplicará de forma gradual, a fin de permitir a los países integrantes que busquen otras fuentes de aprovisionamiento del energético. Esta nueva escalada de Occidente contra la República Islámica tiene como propósito explícito presionar a Teherán para que abandone su programa de desarrollo nuclear.

Ciertamente, la ofensiva occidental hará sentir sus efectos negativos en la población y en la economía de Irán y acercará a la región del golfo Pérsico a una circunstancia bélica. Por añadidura, el embargo europeo agregará volatilidad y desorden al mercado mundial de hidrocarburos, y ello ocurrirá, para colmo, con el telón de fondo de la crisis financiera que se desarrolla, precisamente, en el viejo continente. Es lógico esperar que el cese de las importaciones europeas de petróleo iraní desemboque en un encarecimiento generalizado en la propia Europa y en un fortalecimiento de mercados negros y grises de crudo, toda vez que el iraní seguirá fluyendo hacia el exterior y llegando, por medio de triangulaciones y compras simuladas, a los países promotores del embargo.

Puede darse por descartado, en cambio, que las sanciones económicas consigan lo que dicen pretender: que la nación asiática renuncie a dotarse de tecnología atómica propia. Por el contrario, es previsible que esa determinación se vea fortalecida y que la recrudecida hostilidad occidental se traduzca, dentro de Irán, en un mayor apoyo social al gobierno de Mahmud Ajmadineyad.

La lógica contraproducente de las medidas comentadas es tan evidente que cabe dudar de la sinceridad de los gobiernos europeos al adoptarlas. Da la impresión, más bien, de que esta escalada económica tiene por objetivo real acorralar al régimen de Teherán e impulsar las tensiones regionales hasta un punto en que se vuelva inevitable una guerra en la zona. Nada nuevo habría en esta lógica oculta, si se considera que los gobiernos de las naciones industrializadas han recurrido en forma sistemática a los conflictos bélicos como manera de reactivar economías deprimidas, exportaciones en declive y balanzas comerciales deficitarias.

En esa medida, la hostilidad de Occidente contra Teherán confirma al régimen iraní la pertinencia de dotarse de armas nucleares como única manera de hacer frente a una situación estratégica cada vez más inestable, tras la caída del régimen que encabezaba Muamar Kadafi en Libia, la crisis interna de Siria –alimentada también, en forma manifiesta, por Occidente–, el empantanamiento de la incursión estadunidense en Afganistán y la incertidumbre por el futuro de Pakistán, involucrado en forma creciente en la pugna entre Washington y los integrismos islámicos. En ese panorama, el poderío militar de Israel, respaldado en forma masiva e inequívoca por Washington y sus aliados, y poseedor de un arsenal nuclear nunca declarado, representa un desequilibrio creciente y carente de contrapesos."
