Julian Assange will be hosting a series of in-depth conversations with key political players, thinkers and revolutionaries from around the world. The theme: the world tomorrow.

Upheavals and revolutions in the Middle East have commenced an era of political change that is still unfolding. In the West, the deterioration of the rule of law has demonstrated the bankruptcy of once leading political institutions and ideologies. The internet has never been so strong, or so much under attack.

At this pivotal moment there is an awareness of the need to radically rethink the world around us.

WikiLeaks, as the world’s boldest publisher, has been at the front line of this global movement for understanding and change. Its founder, Julian Assange, as the subject of an ongoing Grand Jury investigation in the United States for over 500 days now, is one of the world’s most recognizable revolutionary figures.

Both a pioneer for a more just world and a victim of political repression, he is uniquely placed to catalyse a global discussion on how to go forward.

"Twitter censurará contenidos en algunos países

twitterEl sitio de mensajería corta Twitter anunció el jueves que comenzará a restringir contenidos en algunos países, estableciendo un cambio de una política que ayudó a impulsar recientes protestas en varias naciones.
“A medida que continuamos creciendo internacionalmente, ingresaremos en países que tienen diferentes ideas sobre la libertad de expresión”, escribió la compañía en un mensaje en un blog el jueves, informó Reuters.
Dijo que incluso ante la posibilidad de esas limitaciones, Twitter no podría existir en algunos países. “Algunos difieren tanto de nuestras ideas que no podremos existir allí”, explicó.
Como un ejemplo de las restricciones, Twitter dijo que podría cooperar con “ciertos tipos de contenidos, como en Francia o Alemania, que prohíben los contenidos nazis”.
Un portavoz de Twitter se negó a dar más detalles sobre el texto publicado. ”Desde hoy, nos reservamos el derecho de negar contenido a usuarios en un país específico pero que estará disponible en el resto del mundo”, dijo el blog de Twitter.
La decisión de comenzar a censurar contenidos representa un gran cambio de su política de apenas un año atrás, cuando manifestantes contra los gobiernos de Túnez, Egipto y otros países árabes coordinaron protestas valiéndose de la red social.
En ese entonces, el sitio había señalado que no pretendía eliminar ningún mensaje de sus usuarios por su contenido.
El jueves, Twitter dijo que para darle transparencia a su decisión había construido un mecanismo para informar a los usuarios en caso de que su mensaje sea bloqueado.
La red de “microblogging” no dejó claro en su publicación cómo determinará exactamente qué mensajes sobrepasan el derecho a la libertad de expresión en cada país, si bien en su página de ayuda al usuario apunta a que el bloqueo de tuiteos responderá a una solicitud por parte de una “entidad autorizada”.
“En nuestro continuo esfuerzo para hacer que nuestros servicios estén disponibles en todas partes, si recibimos una petición válida y apropiada de una entidad autorizada, puede ser necesario impedir el acceso de cierto contenido en un país determinado de vez en cuando”, indicó.
Si Twitter quita un tweet, los usuarios en el país en el que fue eliminado verán un tweet en gris en su línea de tiempo (Timeline) que dice el mensaje del usuario identificado se ha ocultado.

A través de una ampliación de su alianza con Chilling Effects, un proyecto que rastrea las limitaciones en el contenido en línea, la compañía también publicará las solicitudes de retener el contenido.
La compañía dijo que no ha utilizado la nueva capacidad todavía.
“Tratamos de mantener el contenido de hasta donde y cuando podemos, y vamos a ser transparente con los usuarios cuando no podemos”, dijo en el blog.
